HOW MUD CLOTH IS MADE:
Mud Cloth (or Bògòlanfini) is a 100% handmade textile which is produced by the Bambara/Bamana people of Mali in West Africa
The cotton is hand-harvested and spun. The cotton is very rustic and is not chemically treated. You may even find bits of the cotton husk which have not been removed!
Mud cloth is made by hand-weaving long strips of cotton using a primitive weaving tool. These long strips are then stitched together to create a large cloth
The cloth is then dyed by submerging it in a vat of fermented organic material such as tea leaves, leaves from trees, tree bark, and fermented iron-rich mud
The cloth is removed from the vat and left to dry in the sun. To achieve darker colors, the cloths must be submerged in the dye vat and dried several times, this process can take many weeks
The motifs are often hand-painted using a thick paste of mud, either by hand or using a stencil. Mud Cloth can be seen with traditional motifs and also very modern designs which have come about due to demand from abroad

WHAT TO EXPECT:
Due to the fact that this is a handmade fabric, there will be variations in color and texture
Mud cloth is NOT produced in a factory and it is not bleached so the colors are not extreme white/black
The charm of these fabrics is that there are imperfections. The designs are hand-drawn on the fabric rather than printed so expect there to be an organic and irregular design repeat
As each piece is handwoven with a primitive set of tools, there may be weaving imperfections, and irregular weave density. This is part of the appeal of this kind of fabric, and I do my best selling to show this in photos.

CARING FOR YOUR MUDCLOTH:
Important to note is that mud Cloth is NOT color fast. If it is made wet, the color will bleed and lighten unpredictably
If it is washed, it will lighten a lot and it will shrink
