Henry Morley was one of the earliest Professors of English Literature and taught at University College London.
The son of an selling apothecary, Morley studied medicine at many schools before finally adopting literature as his profession in 1850. His principal work was titled English Writers and he has also written several biographies. Condition Report: In a calf prize binding. Externally, generally smart. Some light rubbing to the extremities, particularly the joints. Front joint starting but still firm. Front hinge slightly strained with endpaper loosening. Prize bookplate in pastedown dated 1878. Internally, firmly bound. Relfe brothers binders stamp on verso of front endpaper. Pages generally bright with the occasional spot. Overall: Very Good
