I have been weaving t-shirts into beautiful vibrant rugs ever since a friend gifted me with a pile of sport t-shirts. They weave up into heavy durable rugs and are very fun to weave. I have gone through my own closet and friends have gone through theirs and I now have combined enough material to fill 6 bins. I have dedicated an entire warp to these "rags" so now have a whole pile of rugs that, while not identical, compliment each other very well.
They remind me of the rugs we took to kindergarten when I was a child and I have included a sweet picture of my husband when he was just little tyke on his way to Kindergarten for those who are too young to remember those good old days. He little realized how many rugs he would haul in his later life. My dearest Puck 1951-2016
These rugs are heavy and soft and very colorful. Each one is subtly unique, although they all compliment each other very well.
This stunning rag rug is woven of recycled cotton and cotton blend t-shirts. It is woven in a traditional weft pattern called Hit or Miss.
Hit or Miss is a very traditional technique method of recycling the smallest of leftover pieces of fabric. Because of this it is very labor intensive. I usually fillet 50 or 60 shirts to get a nice big batch of colors. Those are then cut into strips. I hate waste so some of the pieces are as short as four inches. This means I am able to do only one or two hit or miss batches per year. I love the festival of colors and the honoring of traditional techniques.
This is a rug that will brighten any spot.
Warp is done in stripes of Burgundy, Turquoise, Peach, Purple, Yellow and Natural
It is a polyester warp
The size of this rug is 23" x 46"
Length of rug does not include the length of hand knotted fringe
My greatest joy in weaving comes in color exploration. Weaving rag rugs allows me to combine colors in ways that I might not have thought of if the "rags" were not in front of me, daring me to put them together.
All my rugs are woven on a large vintage "Weaver's Delight" rug loom built in 1942. The whole house shakes when I am weaving. The designs are my own and I have won several awards for my work. I use all recycled materials in my wefts and either cotton or polyester warp. My rugs are machine washable in warm or cool. It is best to line dry. Give the fringe a good shake to straighten it and hang over a clothesline or rail. With a bit of care this rug will last a good many years.
Shipping is included on this rug when sent within the contiguous United States. I am happy to ship elsewhere. Please contact me before purchase so that I may provide you with an accurate rate.
