Kyanite is an aluminum silicate mineral. It is typically blue but also occurs in green and teals and oranges. It occasionally exhibits a cat's eye effect. It has different hardness ratings depending on the crystallographic direction. Most cut kyanite is 6.5-7 on the Moh's scale as the softer direction of 4.5 hardness rough rarely survives cutting and polishing. Kyanite occurs worldwide. My kyanite is untreated and probably from India. Please note that kyanite varies in color saturation and some pieces have color zoning.
I use 14/20 goldfill in my work. The ratio refers to the amount of 14kt gold (5% by weight) bonded to a base of brass to give the appearance of karat gold at a fraction of the price. My goldfill contains no nickel. Goldfill is significantly more durable than gold plate as it is much thicker.
