FRENCH Pewter plate, Collectible, Vintage, Hard-to-find with Figures in Traditional GERMAN selling Costume. SCHWALM Region.
I have to start by saying that this is an unusual plate It shows.
I have to start by saying that this is an unusual plate. It shows a couple in traditional German dress but the markings on the underside, “Etainfin 94%”, suggest that it was made in France. I have also been unable to identify the maker. There are two clues, an angel hallmark (but these are common), underneath which are initials that appear to be MIW or MTW. Please read the following description in this context and accept this as my disclaimer that I don't really know what this is. Rare vintage pewter wall hanging plate showing a couple wearing traditional GERMAN costume that varies by region. This one, the SCHWALM, is the location of the famous German Fairy Tale Rotkäppchen, which means 'Little Red Cap'. For some reason, this is usually translated into English as 'Little Red Riding Hood' although, in fact, she didn't wear a hood, but a little red cap like the one on the plate. Pewter plates showing figures in traditional German costume are hard to find, as are plates with this fancier wavy edge cupped rim style edging that is more intricate than most. Diameter is approx. 9 ¼”. There is a wall mount on the back for easy installation. The pewter has no selling dings, is not bent, has scratches. All of our items are vintage, there could be slight imperfections or signs of age. Because assessment of condition is subjective, and to help in your own assessment, listing pics have been taken with and without flash and form part of the condition description.
