In 1887, L. B. Martin and W. S. Brady founded the Fostoria Glass Company in Fostoria, Ohio. When the natural gas deposits in Fostoria ran out, the company moved to Wheeling, West Virginia, and then Moundsville, West Virginia in 1891, where it continued operation until closing in 1983. Fostoria's early tableware pieces were either needle etched or wheel cut. By 1920, Fostoria expanded to a large factory with five furnaces, producing stemware, decorative lamps, container glass, and tableware. With its strong market position, Fostoria survived both the Great Depression and World War II and after WWII, Fostoria began an aggressive period of expansion in which the company's size and production peaked in 1950. Most selling Fostoria pieces are not marked and must be identified by the pattern or etching found on the piece.
Vaseline Glass is a specific color of yellow-green glass made by adding as little as 0.1% to 0.2% Uranium Dioxide to the glass formula. Vaseline Glass is verifiable because the glass turns bright florescent green under an ultraviolet (black) light. Vaseline Glass was primarily made from 1840 until WWII when the US government confiscated all supplies of uranium until lifting the ban in 1958.
