Artist's Note:

As 2020 rapidly approaches, I find myself looking back on the last selling decade and everything that I've learned about photography in those ten years. It's amazing how time slips away so fast, yet the 2010's are still so full of lessons and memories. One of my all-time favorite moments was a morning that I spent at the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove in Kyoto, Japan.

I knew that I had to get there before the infamously large crowds, so I woke up at 2AM, caught a cab, and off I went. Though I found one quickly, there was a small language barrier… I ended up getting dropped off a bit further away than I had hoped.

Who needs cell service when you're lost in Japan? Not me! Who also neglected to check the weather report and forgot to pack for rain? Certainly not this guy!

My good fortune didn't end there, though; despite getting lost and soaked through, I found my way to the beautiful bamboo forest a whole two hours before sunrise. There I sat on the wet ground, listening to the rain falling and the trees swaying in the wind. I savored this moment of peace and enjoyed its quiet slowness.

Soon enough, birds began to chirp. I saw a faint glimmer of light streak across the sky. Sitting up, I realized that I still had the whole place to myself. I began to shoot.

About forty-five minutes later, a couple walked by under their umbrellas. That's when I realized that my morning was complete.
